　　乙炔是一种重要的碳氢化合物，广泛用作焊接燃料和便携式照明燃料，也可作为塑料、丙烯酸衍生物等的化学生产原料。

　　对乙炔实施精确测量（尤其在低 ppb 浓度情况下），使其应用范围拓展到更多的研究领域。一项研究表明，可将乙炔用作示踪气体，以便定量测定垃圾填埋场或其它甲烷源所释放 CH4 的逸散性排放率。
